I Once Saw the World

The Purpose of The Enemy of Light and Dark

I’m Stephen Hamilton and I am blind. I wasn’t blind all my life. I lost my vision at 48 years old. There is how I once saw the world and how I experience it today. When I was sighted, I’m certain I walked right by blind and disabled people without a thought in mind as to what their day might be like. Being completely blind now, I know what it’s like to be in a room full of people and not one person acknowledges me. To stand there, trying to take in my surroundings, against the onslaught of noise and movement, and be utterly overwhelmed and lost.

We live in a time where accessibility is breaking new ground each day. Still, there is a tremendous shortfall. We can reach out to each other in more ways than ever before, and yet, many people feel more and more alone. Amidst our own private struggles, everything closes in, and the world becomes very small, confining, oppressive.

Still, there is a huge lack. We can reach out to each other in more ways than ever before, and yet, many people feel more and more alone. Amidst our own private struggles, everything closes in, and the world becomes very small, confining, oppressive.

Having never been even remotely shy, I am surprised with obstacles I face in interacting with others today. And though my view of the outside world has been quite literally obliterated, my perspective has widened a great deal. I am fascinated by everything that makes us who we are. I may be blind, but I do not want to be blind to another’s experience. In the end, we are all just humans, whatever our private struggles, figuring out how to go about our lives. That is what I’d like to give voice to.

However you experience the world, I hope you’ll join us, in The Enemy of Light and Dark Podcast. This podcast is for everyone. Even if you’re sighted, it might just change how you see things!
