Welcome! I’m Stephen Alexander Hamilton. Let me give you a short bio.
I grew up in the Bay Area of California. As a young man, I served in the United States Air Force in the 32nd Tactical Fighter Squadron, stationed in the Netherlands. After my enlistment, I worked at a major semi-conductor company, as Principal Network Engineer, directly for the CEO, Board of Directors, and Executive Staff. I then became an Associate Professor of Computer/Network Studies. From there, I went on to be Chief Information Officer of a rural health district. I had begun a successful consulting firm, before I entered my long journey into blindness. After going completely blind, I worked for a top manufacturing company that makes artificially intelligent wearable cameras, training sighted people how to teach the blind to use their device.
Like so many all over the world, I struggled with severe alcoholism. At a young age, I started out on the road of sobriety. With the help of a twelve-step program and so many people like me, I now have thirty years of sobriety! As I was gaining this new vision for my life, I was about to lose my actual vision. I had been diagnosed with a rare corneal disease known as acute keratoconus, years before. After seven failed corneal transplants, two failed embryonic grafts, countless procedures, numerous shots in the eye sockets without anesthetic, and a rather astounding amount of pain, my eyes had to be removed.
I’ve been all over the world, both inebriated and teetotal, with vision and without. Growing up with a deep appreciation of my Scottish ancestry, I am in love with all things Scotland and had the good fortune to live, for a time, in the Highlands, with my best friend and partner, Cyndi Godwin, and my super awesome guide dog, from Guide Dogs for the Blind, Sumiko. I am now retired, and we reside in the Pacific Northwest of the US. After settling in, I found myself with a strong desire to impart all that I have learned, both sighted and blind. There is so much I’d like to explore, and I’d like to bring in the experience and expertise of others. The medium of podcasting is perfect for this and so began The Enemy of Light and Dark. I carry my voice out to the wind, so that others may experience the rush of sound in the world I live in.
